Stand in solidarity with the people of Burma

Late last week I noticed that a few of my Facebook friends had joined the group Support the Monks' protest in Burma. Because I have a lot of respect for these friends, a number of questions came to my mind: What kind of monks are these? What are they protesting? Where's Burma again?

Green With Envy: 'We are a country that operates on the principle of profit'

Whenever I used to baby-sit, I always found that negative reinforcement always got my point across more efficiently than positive reinforcement. Though everyone says to reward your kids for being good and reward your dogs for going to bathroom outside as a better form of discipline, I just never saw the benefit. As much as I would offer the kids rewards for not trying to kill each other, it never seemed to stop their desire to rip each other's hair out. Not being able to go outside and play with friends, however, always seemed to do the trick when it came to preventing the inevitable brawls. This anecdote does have a purpose; it will make sense eventually.

Athens Oktoberfest has been canceled

Please let the general populace of Ohio University know that the first Station Street Oktoberfest 2007 Athens Style is CANCELED. Unfortunately, owners' land rights and property issues win out over the community's right to use land for a three-day celebration. Regrettably, the students and residents could have had fun, raised money for charity (Southern California raised over $500,000) and made some money themselves while selling their crafts and such. Perhaps next year, we can try to work together to have a space where we can give the Oktoberfest a home to be proud of. I actually thought the Station Street Plaza and former train depot would be that space. What was I thinking?
